When I talk about what we, a city with a history of standing up against injustice, can do to stop Israel’s mass murder of Palestinians, I begin with numbers, numbers that represent people: you, me, our families, our friends far and wide, a person, a life, a breath. I offer you just a few numbers and ways to look at them as equations as I voice my support for the Divest from Israel resolution. We must not continue to be accomplices to and abettors of killing, and displacing, innocent people.
Since October 7, 2023
—Israel has killed nearly 22,000 Palestinian children in Gaza.
This number equals ALL the CHILDREN under age 18 in CAMBRIDGE and SOMERVILLE. Imagine walking all the streets of these two cities and no kids in sight.
—Israel is murdering an average of one child every 71 minutes. That is 3 dead children during each Monday night 4-hour City Council meeting.
—Israel has made 71,846 children in Gaza orphans.
This number equals NEARLY ALL THE CHILDREN in CAMBRIDGE, SOMERVILLE, WORCESTER, and CHELSEA.
--Israel has deliberately displaced nearly 1.9 million people in Gaza (90% of the population), many displaced more than once, through bombing and other assaults.
This number equals EVERY (every!) RESIDENT of Manhattan, Somerville, and Providence, RI.
